Imagine the scent of pine and cinnamon mingling together and wafting around your holiday house. Sounds dreamy, doesn't it? That's the exact aroma I've got going on in my home these days, all thanks to our fresh Christmas tree (and a balsam-scented candle) + these homemade cinnamon ornaments.
My mom still has the cinnamon ornament I made as a child, albeit it doesn't give off that amazing smell anymore. But I remember hanging the cinnamon, bear-shaped ornament on our Christmas tree every single year while growing up. And I really wanted to make some for our tree this year. Since I wanted to have a craft at Greer's birthday party, I figured it was the perfect way to let the littles get creative and give me an excuse to make these perfectly festive ornaments.
These ornaments are SO simple to make, but you will need to make them 4-5 days in advance because they set on their own.

- 3/4 cup applesauce
- 2 TBSP Elmer's glue
- 1 cup ground cinnamon
- 1 TBSP nutmeg
- 1 TBSP ground cloves
- 1 TBSp ginger
- Supplies
- Cookie cutter(s)
- Wax paper
- Rolling pin
- Straw
- Fabric puff paint
- Baker's twine
- What You'll Do
- In a large bowl, combine the applesauce, glue, and cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger.
- Mix together until a soft dough forms. If the mixture is too wet, add more cinnamon; and if it is too dry, add more applesauce. Use your hands to work the dough.
- Lay out a piece of wax paper on the counter and sprinkle cinnamon on it.
- Roll the dough out to 1/4" thickness.
- Dip the cookie cutters in cinnamon and cut out your ornaments.
- Use the straw to punch a whole in the top of the ornament.
- Leave to dry flat on the wax paper for 4-5 days, turning the ornaments over twice a day for even drying.
- Once completely dry, use the fabric puff paint to decorate and use the baker's twine to hang the ornaments.
**I opted to use small cookie cutters for this instead of the regular size. You can customize the look of your ornaments in a variety of ways!
They are as lovely as they are simple! And they look wonderful hanging on the tree. You would always make a garland out of them too. My preference was to use white paint for decorating, but the options are limitless, and I found that littles prefer a selection of colors to pick from. Greer's sweet little ornaments went on the tree in her room. She has been admiring them for days!
