After a September 2014 trip to go apple picking in Charlottesville, husband and I decided we had found a new fall, family tradition to keep going for years to come. This year was no different, and on the same weekend we put on our fall gear, grabbed a Starbucks breakfast, and made the two hour trek north. Coincidentally, the weather was just about identical to the year before; there was a hazy fog looming, slight drizzle, and cool temperatures. Perfectly fall if you ask me.
Like our first time, this year's apple picking did not disappoint. There's something about picking your fruit straight from the source. Just ask husband, because he couldn't stop picking. Our loot looked like 25+ Jonagold apples, huge in size and delicious in taste. We agreed that we would eat them fresh this year and that those giant apples would also find themselves in pies. I'm going to try to make a from-scratch apple pie. Fingers crossed the lattice work gives me no trouble.
But, back to those apples! Go ahead, join us in the orchards on Carter Mountain....
We might have been at the top of the mountain for apples, but don't think I didn't swell with happiness at the sight of all the pumpkins. We didn't leave with any, but I took my fair share of photos.
Our little lady was talked about so much while we picked apples. We look forward to bringing her back next year to share these sweet family memories with. Thinking about it makes me all kinds of happy.
It's blurry, but it's the best picture of us from our time in the orchard. So it will just have to do!
After picking our share, we headed out of the rows of apple trees to the main 'barn' where our apples were weighed and we paid. The we browsed through the little store they have in the back before heading into Charlottesville for lunch and a little shopping.
I couldn't convince husband that we needed our own jug of cider, so we settled for a cup of peach cider. It was SO good. I can't even begin to explain just how good. Needless to say, I have been craving it all week and am kicking myself for not insisting we get the largest jug!
Another year of apple picking is in the books, and I have a feeling next year is going to be even sweeter! What are some of your fall traditions??
