Mint Juleps: A Twist On A Classic

May 3, 2014

Happy Derby Day!! I hope you've been getting in on some of the horse racing action; maybe you've even been sporting an over-sized, colorful hat and are cheering on the horse with the wildest name. No matter what you're doing or how you're celebrating this timeless sporting event, I've got the drink of all drinks for you to sip on this evening, the derby drink!

Since I'm not a fan of being able to taste the alcohol in cocktail drinks, I thought it would be fun to put a twist on the classic drink of the Kentucky Derby and turn it into something enjoyable for me. First, you must know that I love all frozen drinks, from frappuccinos to piña coladas. The texture is the best and I love the crunch of the ice. And that was my first inspiration for how to create a new kind of mint julep. Really, what better way to transform a drink that already calls for crushed ice?! Then, I was inspired by all the fresh fruit available right now. And like that, I decided to come up with two different fruity flavors for those that just don't dig the taste of mint. That's how the frozen Blackberry Julep and Strawberry Julep were born. Of course, I can't not try out a frozen Mint Julep too.

After whipping up the three variations of the frozen julep, I must say this drink is not for the faint hearted. The bourbon is definitely a strong taste, but you can always substitute another mixer of your choice. Try out a lemon-lime soda if you're looking to go alcohol-free (it's a go-to staple in our frozen mixed drinks). Cheers to the races!
